How to extract images from a PDF
Recover the original embedded pictures at full quality, without re-encoding them.
When the source files for a designed document are lost, the document itself is often the last surviving copy of the photographs inside it. Those images are stored as complete files within the PDF, and they can be taken back out exactly as they went in.
This is genuinely lossless: nothing is re-rendered or re-compressed, so you get the original bytes.
The steps
- Upload the PDF.
- Optionally set a minimum width or height to skip icons, bullets and dividers.
- Decide whether a repeated image should be exported once or every time it appears.
- Run the tool and download the ZIP.
Why you get more images than you expected
Backgrounds, rules, logos, bullets and decorative flourishes are all stored as images too. A brochure with eight photographs might yield sixty files, most of them a few pixels across.
Setting a minimum width and height filters those out. Starting around 200 pixels usually separates real photographs from interface furniture.
Why you sometimes get fewer
Charts, diagrams and logos are frequently vector graphics rather than embedded images. They are drawing instructions, not pictures, so there is nothing to extract. Text is the same. If you need those as images, render the page instead with PDF to Images and crop what you need.
Repeated images
A logo on every page of a fifty-page report is one stored image referenced fifty times. By default it is exported once. Turn on duplicates only if you specifically need to know where each occurrence sits.
